Occupational therapy promotes health by enabling people to perform meaningful and purposeful occupations. Occupation can be defined as an active process of living: from the beginning to the end of life. Occupations are all the active processes of looking after ourselves and others, enjoying life, and being socially and economically productive over the lifespan and in various contexts.
These include work, leisure, self care, domestic and community activities. Occupational therapists work with individuals, families, groups, communities and organizations to facilitate health, well-being and justice through engagement in occupation.
Occupational therapists help their clients work towards a more independent life with the feeling of accomplishment. They want their clients to have the chance to live well and accept whatever problems they have to overcome, by finding new ways to manage them.
The primary goal of occupational therapy is to enable people to participate in the activities of everyday life. Occupational therapists achieve this outcome by enabling people to do things that will enhance their ability to participate or by modifying the environment to better support participation.
Occupational therapists use careful analysis of physical, environmental, psychosocial, mental, spiritual, political and cultural factors to identify barriers to occupation.
